LEONIDA SEREDA Suddenly, on Sunday, May 27, 2007, at the St. Boniface General Hospital, Leonida Sereda passed away at the age of 85 years. She was predeceased by her mother Leokadia Koberstein (1977); her son Gerhard Sereda (1981); her father Rudolf Koberstein (1983); and her husband Paul Sereda (1993). She is survived by her grandchildren, Rebecca (Romel Marquez), David Sereda and Stephen Sereda (Abby Young); and her daughter-in-law Zoria. She is also survived by her sisters, Elfriede (William) Wittenberg, Holdine (Philipp) Kaplun, Erika (Wally) Kelbert; brothers, Walter (Taisa) Koberstein, Arthur (Irmgard) Koberstein; along with several nieces and nephews. Leonida was born in Poland on November 27, 1921. She met her husband Paul in 1943. Her son Gerhard was born in 1944. The Seredas immigrated to Canada in 1956, settling in Winnipeg. She and her husband both worked in a sewing factory until their retirement. Leonida's family was her true joy in life. She was very proud when her son Gerhard graduated from University of Manitoba Law School, and subsequently received his Call to the Bar and began his law practice. She was devastated by Gerhard's sudden and premature passing. After his death, Leonida focused her love and attention on her three grandchildren, hosting them frequently in her home, cooking many meals for them, and providing assistance whenever and however she could. Although she was a person of humble means, Leonida was exceedingly generous. She was well known for richly tipping the taxi cab drivers that drove her to the grocery store, saying, they have to live too. In retirement, she enjoyed going bowling with her union group, and taking care of her house on Bibeau Bay. Leonida moved to Meadowood Manor Towers in 1997 where she enjoyed the company of other residents. She was also blessed by the chaplaincy ministry of Rev. Edward Hamm and his wife Helga, and joined the Meadowood Manor Fellowship for her spiritual needs. As health challenges became more difficult, Leonida moved to Beacon Hill Lodge in October 2005, where she was cared for until her passing. We sincerely thank all the staff of Beacon Hill Lodge, 7th floor, for their excellent and compassionate care of Leonida. Funeral service will be held at Friends Funeral Service, 2146 Main Street, on Monday, June 4, 2007, at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Edward Hamm officiating. Visitation will occur prior to the service commencing at 10:30 a.m., with interment following the service at All Saints Cemetery, Riverside. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Leonida may be made to Meadowood Manor Foundation, 577 St. Anne's Road, Winnipeg, MB R2M 5B2, in support of the Chaplaincy Fund.
